We welcomed University of Calgary intern Sonia Ndong to the NuWells team. Through her internship, Sonia is exploring geological site screening and subsurface considerations to support our technical modelling and help advance the NuWells concept.

The NuWells team was thrilled to take part in a facility tour at the PCL Nisku facility, which has earned the ASME N-type Certification. This allows PCL to fabricate, assemble and install nuclear-grade components.

Co-Founder Paul visited North American Drillers and Shaft Drillers International in Pennsylvania to see large-bore shaft drilling equipment and operations firsthand. The visit explored how proven drilling expertise could support underground infrastructure for advanced nuclear energy.

We joined Risktec Solutions, part of TÜV Rheinland Group, in Calgary for a HAZID workshop focused on safety and responsible technology development. The session explored considerations across the project lifecycle and safeguards to inform our preliminary safety case and regulatory engagement.

NuWells was named the 2026 Avatar Innovations Technology Stream Winner, earning the highest overall score among 27 teams. The milestone recognizes our progress toward scalable underground infrastructure for advanced nuclear energy.
THE IDEA
The initial concept was developed by Founder Paul Boone through an energy innovation accelerator: using proven large-diameter drilling technology to create underground containment for nuclear power.
TESTING THE FUNDAMENTALS
In the Spring of 2022, four consecutive senior design projects at the University of Texas at Austin examined the concept's feasibility, from reactor and wellbore sizing to downhole heat exchange process simulation, and techno-economic analysis.
NUWELLS IS FOUNDED
NuWells Energy Inc. is founded in Calgary to develop and commercialize this technology. The same year, Paul completes a Master of Science in well design, focused on engineering large-bore wells for underground hydrogen storage.
PROTECTING THE INNOVATION
NuWells files an international (PCT) patent application covering its large-bore containment technology.
DERISKING AND BUILDING THE ECOSYSTEM
NuWells is selected for the Avatar Innovations program in Calgary. The team begins early engagement with reactor technology companies, advancing customer discovery and business development. Technical de-risking work with research partners is also underway.
THE ROAD TO PARTNERSHIP
NuWells continues to de-risk the technology while building relationships with reactor technology companies and advancing toward its first LOI.
In parallel, the team is engaging potential fabrication partners and municipal stakeholders that could support a future pilot site.
